The Most Common Myths About Phone Repairs — Busted
Phone repairs attract more myths than a Greek history book.
Between TikTok tips, DIY forums, and that one friend who “knows a guy,” it’s no wonder people get confused about what’s true and what’s absolute nonsense.
Let’s clear things up — properly — and bust the most common phone repair myths we hear every week in Christchurch.
“If the screen still works, it’s fine.”
A cracked screen is never “fine.”
Under the glass, the touch layer, backlight and internal connectors are already under stress.
Cracks let in moisture, dust and pressure — and the damage spreads even if you’re gentle.
A working cracked screen is just a temporary situation.
“Rice will fix water damage.”
Rice fixes dinner, not phones.
It doesn’t draw water out of internal components — it just delays proper drying while corrosion gets worse.
Worse still, rice can leave dust inside your phone.
If it got wet, turn it off and bring it in. Skip the pantry.
“Third-party parts are always bad.”
Not true.
There are cheap, low-grade parts (which we avoid), and there are high-quality aftermarket or OEM parts that perform almost exactly like the originals.
The key is where the part comes from — and who installs it.
“Only Apple/Samsung can repair your phone safely.”
Independent repair shops like ours use tools, safe procedures and high-quality parts.
In many cases, repairs are faster, cheaper, and just as reliable — without shipping your phone away for days.
“Water-resistant means waterproof.”
Water-resistant phones can handle splashes, not swims.
Showers, pools, rain, or a toilet drop can still breach seals — especially if the phone is older or previously repaired.
Water resistance fades over time.
“Fast charging ruins your battery.”
Modern fast charging is safe — unless the phone overheats, the cable is cheap, or the battery is failing.
The bigger danger is heat, not the speed of the charge.
“If my phone isn’t turning on, it must be dead.”
Often it’s something small:
flat battery
failed charging port
damaged button
faulty screen
software freeze
Plenty of “dead” phones revive easily with a proper diagnosis.
“Repair shops just replace parts blindly.”
Not here.
We diagnose properly, test thoroughly, and only replace parts when it actually solves the problem.
If something doesn’t need fixing, we’ll tell you.
