Ready to Recycle? Here’s How to Prep Your Old Phone Properly
Recycling your old phone is a smart and environmentally responsible choice—but before you hand it over, a little preparation goes a long way. From protecting your personal data to ensuring the device is ready for its next life, these simple steps can make all the difference. Whether you’re upgrading, decluttering, or simply doing your part for the planet, here’s how to prepare your phone for recycling the right way—in just three easy steps.
Step 1: Back Up Your Data
Before you part ways with your device, make sure all your important data is safely backed up. This includes your photos, contacts, messages, app data, and any documents stored locally.
iPhone users can use iCloud or connect to a computer via iTunes or Finder for a full backup.
Android users can back up using Google Drive or transfer files manually to a computer or external storage.
Taking this step not only protects your memories and important files but also makes setting up your new phone much easier.
Step 2: Perform a Full Factory Reset
Once your data is backed up and safely stored, it’s essential to remove all personal information from the device. A factory reset ensures your private data—including emails, saved passwords, and banking apps—is fully wiped from the phone.
On most phones, this can be done via Settings > General Management > Reset > Factory Data Reset (wording may vary slightly by model and software version).
Ensure you log out of all accounts (Apple ID, Google account, Samsung account, etc.) beforehand, or the device may remain locked via activation security features like iCloud Lock or FRP (Factory Reset Protection).
Be sure the device is fully charged or plugged in before performing the reset, and follow the on-screen instructions to complete the process.
Step 3: Remove Accessories and Prepare for Drop-off
Take a moment to remove any accessories or extras you wish to keep. This includes:
SIM cards and microSD cards
Cases, screen protectors, pop sockets
Charging cables or wireless accessories
Wipe the device gently with a microfibre cloth to remove any dust, grime, or fingerprints—especially if you’re handing it in at a repair shop or recycling centre. A tidy, well-prepared phone can streamline the recycling or refurbishing process and reduce handling delays.
If you’re recycling through our store, we offer a $15 discount on eligible repairs—just ask our team for details when you drop your phone off.
