Temporary Fixes for a Cracked Screen (Until You Get It Repaired)
Cracked your screen but can’t get to the shop just yet? Don’t panic — there are a few simple ways to keep your phone usable and protect it from further damage while you wait for a proper repair.
Apply a Screen Protector
If the crack is light and the touch still works, applying a tempered glass screen protector can help hold the glass together.
It won’t make the damage disappear, but it’ll prevent shards from lifting or cutting your fingers — and can slow the spread of the crack.
Use Clear Packing Tape (in a Pinch)
No protector? A strip of clear packing tape can act as a short-term solution.
Carefully trim it to fit the display (avoiding the speaker and camera) and press out any air bubbles. It’s not glamorous, but it’ll stop loose glass from getting worse.
Avoid Pressure and Moisture
Even a small crack can let in dust, oil, or moisture, which can damage internal components.
Avoid pressing too hard on the screen and keep it away from wet environments like the kitchen or bathroom.
Use Assistive Touch or Lock Rotation
If your touchscreen is partially unresponsive, you can use your phone’s built-in accessibility shortcuts:
On iPhone, enable AssistiveTouch to navigate without swiping.
On Android, use One-Handed Mode or voice commands to reduce screen reliance.
These can keep your phone functional until you get it properly repaired.
Don’t Delay the Repair
Temporary fixes buy you time — but that’s all they do.
Cracks nearly always spread, and once the display or touch layer fails, the repair cost can jump.
A fast, professional repair prevents water damage, touch issues, and costly replacements later on.
